The Village and local community recognition is a symbolic return of sorts.
A return to natural self-hood and sustenance.
Truly, I see people walking around this world,..identities held in the air like helium balloons..precariously,on little strings, like leashes held by others. (Its ALmost like their identities hinge on where they work and what they wear to do it..) They spend so little time relaxing or gardening with their family..they spend so little of their lifes identifying themselves IN their own lives..and when the work goes away or is lost? No time for life then, either, somehow..just searching for more of the same, but,.. I digress.
What does The Village offer THEM?..or us?
If we fall, it can catch us.
If THEY want to fly, they AND we can test out wings here...try strengths here. True fortitude!.. ..within and without!
Things will grow well in The Village. All things. People..plants,..relationships,..spiritual connections to the life lead..all bloom in places such as this Village I envision!MANY of them in fact!
Making love-enriched selves.. and food.. and ideas.. and healed-hearts and soaring-minds and many, many many better ways forward!
Aside from being the blueprint for sustainability, The CSA Village model provides every being within it's circle of activity, a chance to excel at self-hood. A chance to be the best being one can be! (A chance to grow, figuratively and literally too.)
On the one side,..Professionals looking to expand their wealth of knowledge can volunteer as Teachers, learning to give and teach in new and creative ways. They are opened and healed and propelled forward in this aspect.
The damaged can learn to heal and re-discover their greatness, in a garden, where greatness is always bound to grow, if tended with love.*its the kind of promise no man can argue*
And Love and respect will be the Standard in such a Golden-Rule-type Village!
I see opportunities in every scratch-made setting for greatness! Not to mention a beautiful way to begin replacing the things we buy from overseas,..with one of a kind treasures closer to home!
But.. greatness shows itself in not only production of goods,..but refinement of spirit. The unfolding of the beautiful creative self..
There is a chance to fill in the emptiness and quiet-times with creative endeavors and "making". A chance to show what you know or are learning..
Everyone grows food,..yes,..but after the daily tending is done, there is time for expressing the energy that still stirs inside!.. In music, art, craft-for-pleasure/fun and trade..
A million ways to find the intangible-nearly spiritual-reward in BEing. *very simply, in fact*
A million chances to contribute to one's community and earn the rights of true honor. If holding down most normal, societal cog-wheel-jobs is honorable,..but unsatisfying, then why not refocus that well intentioned energy, closer where the people you love can see and more fully appreciate the fruits of one's labors..honor them.
Feeding people is pretty darned honorable if you ask me!
And honor,..it is something hard to find, or to be recognized, as HAVING, "out there" in that "world".
~*~
The truth is,..we are where we work, to some respect..and if we find ourselves unemployed by "the world"..we are rather at a loss..maybe even viewing ourselves as somehow without respect INSTANTANEOUSLY!(Which is not true.)No,.. If true respect and honor are earned over a lifetime, how can they possibly be lost by losing a job in a day?
Many find themselves without homes or a sense of purpose or identity very quickly in this "world" of business. Some have families to suppport too..public schools to keep their kids in attendance at.. where do they go? What will they do? In no time short,..without the access to washing facilities and the heaviness of despair weighing in their possibility-realm, the options become less, and inside of a very real world,..they begin to fade into a limbo of hopelessness, or misunderstanding.
"The World" begins judging them,...deciding by the dirt on their clothes whether or not they deserve that dollar...
A man walking by, still able to identify himself inside of his job, inside of his "club"..inside of a life that connects dots to other dots..this man now thinks back to adages of philosophy he once heard when he was daydreaming in class..something along the lines of karma,..he can't recall completely,..but is assured with those notions,..to walk by unashamed(somehow) by his lack of care.
Do we REALLY all "get what we have coming"..? For that man's sake,..I hope thats not true. Because if thats true, we're ALL in a World of trouble. The only difference between these two beings? A layer of earth.. and a world of hurt. The cleaner of the two?Hmmmm..is that the "clean" that shines from withIN or somewhere else?..or does that kind of clean shine at all? And what ON?And what FOR?
I find this subtle, though monumentally important difference in the self's recognition of "shine"...what some call "ego"..what others regard as "honor".
So,..to re-instill honor in our world that cannot hand it out. We re-instill a system by which honor is a beautiful by-product..A Village System.
When I originally envisioned The Village Solution or system of doing things, it was proposed to myself in my own mind as both a "fix" to the problem many families face when deciding to eat and live more in tune with the seasons and earth, and also a good fit for sustainable food-sourcing for Cities far and wide; I am again getting back to the roots of this idea,..ENDING HOMELESSNESS!!
I am talking taking up empty City lots across the country and filling them with small, well planned Community Supported Agricultural Communities. Initially assembled with portable, multifunctional yurts(you know, the kind you rent at the campgound, if you're really lucky and plan way in advance)..and eventually,..a beautiful, sustainable, handcrafted Village Center,..a jewel crown to any town!
A place where the music flows freely,..where the bees and birds and creatures tiny, and small have a safe haven. And a Place where the Men, Women and children that run the market stands and street vending food fair (that was grown 6 feet away, and picked that day also by them)..that those people,..you don't know where they were before,..but as they give the richness of life's essence out to "the world"..you become immensely grateful they are where they are now. A place where we can come to honor this Earth we share with them..and them as well. They will be our healers,..bridging the gap between "the worlds" through an extension of Eden's Healing garden and wholesome ways.
I mean, how many empty blocks are MAYBE eventually turned into community gardens? That's great! That serves ONE purpose, but,..what if we could think one step further, serve MORE?.. and actually MAN these plots with people to keep things going and growing right! (And if those badly needed workers and tenders just happened to need work and homes?Perfect!)
Make homes and something positive for all! Something badly needed, mutually appreciated..equally beautiful. Every town could have a Village (or MANY Villages, like mini-havens of goodness) there, accessible by all , like a healing heart-center, within its boundaries!
We could easily begin enriching life from within at the very roots it grows forth either well or un-well FROM! Blossoming outward, spreading it's positive message of abundance and healing in scrolls of fresh eggs, herbs, vegetables and scripts of local-honey and candles and love-notes of hand-thrown ceramics and on-site blown glass treasures! And classes could be offered in the hearth-center, where a meal can also be earned and found, any time of day.
Because, after-all, EVERYONE needs and deserves a place to call home,..likewise, EVERYONE needs locally grown and sourced foods and goods! And as we implement this knowledge into a useful system and plan, (The CSA Village-System),.. as we excell at this mutual tasking, the foundations for a path of honor are placed on the right path ahead as well!..For ALL~

I love your ability to vision something completely different. We'll need to do more than "infill" development (turning parking lots into more productive uses is excellent, but not enough). Really, we should consider demolishing large portions of the suburbs (500 acres or more) to create these agricultural and community based villages.
I was just having a conversation with my grandmother, yesterday, about the need to end homelessness. The way I see it there are three types of homeless people.
1. The chronically homeless (mental illness, long-term)
2. Down on their luck (family lost job, less than a year)
3. Those who chose it (adventurous, tba)
I think, perhaps, the CSA approach you write about could work really well in creating a village setting for the homeless. Perhaps build homes that are minimal, have some oversite and build the community and very-local economy around food?
I love your idea!!!!
